Creative Conversations: In Collaboration with Nicole Charbonnet

Creative Conversations: In Collaboration with Nicole Charbonnet,” is an exhibit of collaborative work with Academy students. Over the course of several years, Charbonnet worked individually with students, passing work back and forth in a search for stylistic and substantive confluence. What initially served as a teaching exercise, evolved into an open-ended, dynamic dialogue that expanded artistic vocabularies, blurred the boundaries between artists, and ultimately became a cohesive demonstration of the power of collaboration.

The collaborative process is both a ludic game of aesthetic tag and a meaningful opportunity for each artist to move beyond innate, egocentric bias and monocular vision.  As each artist, responds, revises and reinvents the other’s marks, the exchange of ideas and sensibilities encourages an internalization of each other’s formal and conceptual decision-making and ideational methodologies. This collaborative approach provides a playful arena in which the artists can broaden their creative perspectives, bringing a more expansive, binocular vision back to their individual practices. This provocative exhibition, therefore, stands as both an archive of these creative conversations and a testament to the generative possibilities that emerge when authorship is shared, contested and reframed.
