Plein Air Watercolor Under the Oaks - Sean Friloux


This Plein Air Watercolor class will teach students the techniques and skills necessary to paint outdoors using watercolor.
Emphasizing direct observation and capturing natural light, students will learn how to paint landscapes and nature on location.
The course will cover:
- Fundamental watercolor techniques
- Composition
- Strategies for painting in the open air
- Overcoming challenges such as weather and changing light conditions
Course Objectives
By the end of the course, students will:
- Gain confidence in painting on location
- Learn techniques to capture light, shadow, and atmosphere in watercolor
- Develop an understanding of composition, color theory, and texture
- Build the ability to paint landscapes and outdoor scenes quickly and effectively
- Learn to troubleshoot common issues encountered when painting en plein air
Materials Needed
- Watercolor paints, tube or pan set, suggested colors will be provided
- Watercolor brushes:
- Variety of round and flat brushes
- Sizes 6 to 12
- Watercolor paper:
- Cold-Press
- 140 lb or 300 gsm preferred
- Palette for mixing paint
- Water container for rinsing brushes
- Paper towels for blotting
- Portable easel, lightweight and stable for outdoor use
- Sketchbook for practice and studies
- Plein Air setup, optional:
- Portable stool
- Sun protection
- Other outdoor supplies

Sean Friloux lives and works in New Orleans and is accomplished in watercolor, graphite drawings and acrylic. His work has been featured in Plein Air Magazine and Watercolor Artist Magazine.
