“The way you live, the people you choose to love and the way you love them, the way you vote, the words that come out of your mouth… will also become the raw material for the art you make.”
— Teresita Fernández

Through your own work and touching on art historical references, this class helps students focus on individuality in art and deepening their practice.

This is not a “how to” class; it is a self-directed independent study. That said, beginners are welcome, as it’s never too early to explore artistic influences and investigate paths that acknowledge the myth of originality while simultaneously making art that is most cogent for you, personally.

The objective of this class is not to learn new skills as much as it is to explore your potential for making meaningful art and to expand possibilities for future growth.

“Being an artist is not just about what happens when you are in the studio,” Teresita Fernández asserted in her commencement address on what it means to be an artist. “The way you live, the people you choose to love and the way you love them, the way you vote, the words that come out of your mouth… will also become the raw material for the art you make.”

Prerequisites: Previous classes in drawing and painting are strongly suggested.

Supplies: Students should bring the supplies they want to work with.
