Michelangelo and the Renaissance - Cybèle Gontar von Redern

Designed as an overview of the Italian Renaissance, this 13-week course considers the time frame 1450-1600 through the lens of the life of Michelangelo Buonarotti (1475-1564). His work in painting, sculpture and architecture is considered to epitomize the High Renaissance (1490-1530) though all phases will be considered. In addition to time spent considering Michelangelo’s biography, his major works and themes, and those of his contemporaries, each class will include the discussion of a focused topic such as the development of perspective, artists’ utilization of mirrors and lenses, the application of pigments and gilding, and the reception of artworks over time.
