Light Painting Photography Workshop - Richard Vallon


Learn how to paint with light to make unique images.
Experience Required
- Beginning photography is helpful, but not required
Class Requirements
- Digital SLR or mirrorless camera with interchangeable normal zoom lens
- A loaner camera will be available for the class, so if you do not mind waiting for a turn, no camera is required
- Extra battery or battery charger
- Tripod
- Tripods will also be available to loan, but it is helpful if you have one
Class 1
Students will:
- Learn a little about the history of light painting
- Learn about modern LED based tools, both purchased as is and those easily made or modified by users
- Learn fundamentals of light in terms of art and imaging
- Understand the difference between hard and soft light
- Learn simple camera settings for 15 to 30 second exposures to capture images
During the first class, students will use simple light painting tools to photograph a still life.
Class 2
Students will:
- Use both electronic flash and light painting tools
- Photograph a live figure model
Please note:
- Students will be working in near darkness during the actual painting process
Class 3, Processing the Images
There will also be a follow up class.
Students can submit their images to the instructor and learn how to process them in:
- Adobe Photoshop
- Lightroom Classic
What the Class Is Not
- Students will mostly not be using the light painting tools to draw pictures in the air
- These tools will instead be used to uniquely light physical objects and bring out aspects of form

Richard Vallon
Richard Vallon Jr. was born and raised in New Orleans. A graduate of ASU with a BFA (photography), he has enjoyed teaching photography since 1981. He has taught the UNO Metro College photo classes and classes at Lakeside Camera since 2004.
