Intro to oil painting at noafa
Weds 6-9pm
Sept 10 – Dec 10, No class Oct 15 and Nov 26, 12 classes
During this course, students will learn about and practicethe fundamental techniques and processes of oil painting. Based primarily inobservational painting, students will gain familiarity with oil paintingmaterials and processes, strengthen their perceptual skills, and develop anunderstanding of color, value, and two-dimensional design. Throughdemonstrations, painting exercises, and group discussions, students will easeinto the broad field of oil painting and gain the experience to further pursueindividual painting endeavors. This class will be great for those with littleto no painting experience or those interested in refining their skills startingwith the basics. Experience with drawing fundamentals are recommended.
Suggested Materials:
All materials are flexible and up topersonal preferences. Feel free to reach out with any questions.
Oil Paint: Irecommend Gamblin or Gamblin 1980 for a solid student grade paint at a goodprice point.
· Hansa yellow (or lemon yellow or cad yellowlight) 37ml
· yellow ochre 37ml
· Quinacridone Red 37ml (alizarin and cadmium red can also workwell)
· ultramarine blue 37 ml
· cerulean blue hue 37 ml
· burnt sienna 37ml
· raw umber 37ml
· titanium white 150 ml
Paint Brushes
· An assortment - Filberts, Flats, and orrounds: #’s 2, 4, 8, 12
Solvent/Medium:
· Refined Linseed Oil –small bottle/8oz(painting medium)
· Gamsol, terpenoid, or other odorless oilpainting solvent
Painting Surfaces: Surfacesare a matter of preference, and you may want to try a few things out as thecourse moves forward. I recommend Blick Studio Stretched Cotton Canvas.
· Pre-stretchedCanvas or panels- To start with: Three 9inx12in, two 12x16in
· Canvas pad, mixed media sketchbook, or scrapsubstrate for small studies. Canson Canva Paper Pads 9" x 12" willwork great
Other Supplies:
· 1 small plastic squeeze dropper bottles formedium
· Palette knife (I like the flat design, but thetrowel shape is fine too)
· Palette or disposable palette pad (11” x 14” or larger):
· Silicoil or other brush cleaning jar
· latex gloves
· cotton rags, old t-shirts, or heavy duty papertowels
· Drawing Pencils (and any other drawing materialspreferred)
· Masking tape
· Box to carry everything
