Intro to Stone Carving: Direct Carving Biomorphic Forms - H. Grace Boyle


Learn the basics of stone carving, a reductive technique, by working with Italian alabaster.
We will be using the direct carving method, meaning using no references, to complete a stone carving.
This process includes:
- Sketching the design on the stone
- Blocking out the form
- Refining the form
- Sanding
- Polishing and sealing the final sculpture
Emphasis will be placed on:
- Learning the technical methods of stone sculpture
- Honing each student's ability to respond to the inclusions, coloring, and consistency of natural stone

- 8 lbs Mario's White Alabaster
- Canvas sandbag (the Compleat Sculptor), 6x5x3in, #101204
- 8 piece heavy rasp/riffler set
- 10 piece riffler needle file set (Amazon)
- China Marker or colored pencil
- Dust mask
