Learn the basics of stone carving, a reductive technique, by working with Italian alabaster.

We will be using the direct carving method, meaning using no references, to complete a stone carving.

This process includes:

  • Sketching the design on the stone
  • Blocking out the form
  • Refining the form
  • Sanding
  • Polishing and sealing the final sculpture

Emphasis will be placed on:

  • Learning the technical methods of stone sculpture
  • Honing each student's ability to respond to the inclusions, coloring, and consistency of natural stone

  • 8 piece heavy rasp/riffler set
  • 10 piece riffler needle file set (Amazon)
  • China Marker or colored pencil
  • Dust mask
