Intro to Stone Carving: Biomorphic Forms in Alabaster - H. Grace Boyle

Learn the basics of stone carving, a reductive technique, by working with Italian alabaster.  We will be using the direct carving method, (meaning using no references) to complete a stone carving.  This process includes sketching the design on the stone, blocking out the form, refining the form, sanding, and polishing/sealing the final sculpture.  Emphasis will be placed on learning the technical methods of stone sculpture and also honing each student's ability to respond to the inclusions, coloring, and consistency of natural stone.
