Description

Participants will explore life model sketching and learn to capture the form, movement, and emotion of a portrait or figure with charcoal and pastel.

The main goal of this class is disciplining the hand to translate what the eye sees onto the drawing surface. Through the repeated physical activity of drawing, students will refine their dexterity and intellectual powers of observation and visualization.

What You’ll Learn

  • Begin with 2 to 5 minute gesture poses, progressing to 1 to 3 hour poses
  • Charcoal, soft, and oil pastel techniques for drawing from life
  • Utilizing limited time and speeding up the drawing process

  • Shading and measuring techniques

Additional Information

  • Models will be nude, students must be at least 18 years of age
  • Suitable for all levels, from beginners to advanced students

Materials

Additional materials may be requested during the semester.

  • Large, at least 18" x 24", good quality drawing paper
  • Large, at least 18" x 24", newsprint for daily drawings
  • Vine charcoal
  • White charcoal
  • Nupastel or Cretacolor hard pastel set and pastel paper
  • Conte pencil
  • Assortment of pencils
  • Assortment of erasers:
    • Gum
    • White plastic
    • Mechanical, pointy eraser, etc.
  • Fixative
  • Portfolio or something clean for carrying drawings
  • Container for bringing materials to class
  • Pencil blender
  • Chamois or a soft rag
  • Pencil sharpener, small brass or metal one
