Beginning Oil/Acrylic Painting - Arturo Perez


Introduction to the fundamental skills and concepts involved in oil or acrylic painting.
This class is open to all and is suitable for:
- Those new to oil painting
- Those with some experience who want to build painting skills and confidence in the medium of oil paint
Problems are structured to provide students with:
- A knowledge of visual language
- Development of expressive content

Supplies
- Palette knives
- Small glass container with lid for solvent
- Disposable gloves
- Rags
- 1 small acrylic paint:
- Acrylic Burnt Sienna
- Burnt Umber
- Or Yellow Ochre
Optional Solvent
- Gamsol
- Other odorless turpentine substitute, such as Turpenoid, for thinning paint and cleanup
Cleaning Materials
- Rags
- Good quality paper towels, such as blue automotive towels
Palette Options
- Enamel palette
- Glass palette
- Disposable palette
- Dollar store baking sheets
- Tempered glass
Brushes
- Various sizes, such as 2, 4, 6, 8
- Brights
- Flats
- Filberts
- A couple of round brushes, small or medium, may be useful
Recommended Brush Types
- Synthetic sable
- Natural white bristle
- Other synthetic mixed brushes
There are quality value packs with a variety of sizes and types available at most art stores that are good for beginners.
Painting Support
Students will need a canvas or other rigid support to paint on.
Options include:
- Stretched canvas
- Wood, such as luan 1/4” plywood or other wood panel
- Various sizes
We will start with smaller compositions:
- 8” x 10”
- 9” x 12”
Oil painting paper or canvas panels would be perfect to start on.
Students may choose:
- A rectangular canvas
- A square format

Arturo Perez
Arturo Perez has has been teaching for over 25 years (K-12 to adults to seniors), has a Bachelor Degree from UNO in both Fine Arts and Science, has a Master of Fine Arts degree from Pratt Institute, and also volunteers at WWOZ, Creative Arts New Orleans (CANO) and Creative Industries. He continues to be involved in art and dance education teaching classes, workshops, private lessons, exhibiting work, and performing.
