Description
In this course, students will cover many foundational principles and techniques to gain a firm grounding in the art of drawing.
Students will:
- Study master works
- Complete a series of exercises aimed at understanding:
- Gesture
- Structure
- Basic forms
- Simplification
The course will cover:
- Comparative measurement
- Plumb lines
- Block-ins
- Terminator lines
- Form turning, also known as rendering
Students will participate in:
- Class discussions
- Demonstrations
- Personalized critiques
Prerequisites
- None
Supplies Available for Purchase
- 18” x 24” Strathmore sketchbook
- Do not use newsprint
- 6B, 2B, B, and 2H graphite pencils, any brand
- Kneaded eraser
- Measuring stick, shish kebab skewer is fine
- X-Acto knife for sharpening
Supplies Not Included in Kit
- 150 grit piece of sandpaper
- Plumb line:
- Approximately 3’ string with weight attached to one end
- 18” x 24” drawing board or similar rigid support
- Classrooms have boards available for use during class

Jonathan's themes often reflect the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity, perhaps best illustrated by his paintings of Hurricane Katrina that devastated his hometown of New Orleans. He believes not only in the power of art, but its ability to move people.
