In this course, students will cover many foundational principles and techniques to gain a firm grounding in the art of drawing.

Students will:

  • Study master works
  • Complete a series of exercises aimed at understanding:
    • Gesture
    • Structure
    • Basic forms
    • Simplification

The course will cover:

  • Comparative measurement
  • Plumb lines
  • Block-ins
  • Terminator lines
  • Form turning, also known as rendering

Students will participate in:

  • Class discussions
  • Demonstrations
  • Personalized critiques

Prerequisites

  • None

Supplies Available for Purchase

  • 18” x 24” Strathmore sketchbook
    • Do not use newsprint
  • 6B, 2B, B, and 2H graphite pencils, any brand
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Measuring stick, shish kebab skewer is fine
  • X-Acto knife for sharpening

Supplies Not Included in Kit

  • 150 grit piece of sandpaper
  • Plumb line:
    • Approximately 3’ string with weight attached to one end
  • 18” x 24” drawing board or similar rigid support
    • Classrooms have boards available for use during class
