Introduction of the fundamental skills and concepts involved in oil or acrylic painting.
This class is open to all and is suitable for those new to oil painting and those with some experience that want to build painting skills and confidence in the medium of oil paint.
Problems are structured to provide students with a knowledge of visual language along with a development of expressive content.
Students learn color theory, tools, materials, preparation of canvas, value, and techniques while painting from observation.

*This limited palette is sufficient for most paintings and is a good starting palette if you don’t already have oil paints.

- Cadmium Red Medium
- Ultramarine Blue
- Alizarin Crimson
- Titanium White (large tube)
- Winsor Red (or Cadmium Red Medium)
- Yellow Ochre

- Viridian
- Small glass container with lid for solvent
- Disposable gloves
- Rags
Also bring 1 acrylic paint:
- Acrylic Burnt Sienna or Burnt Umber
- A painting medium such as Galkyd, Liquin, or Neo Megilp
- Solvent (optional): Gamsol or other odor-less turpentine substitute (Turpenoid) for thinning paint and clean up
- Baby oil or safflower oil (for brush clean up)
NOTE: Odorless solvents (Gamsol, Turpenoid, etc.) are not absolutely necessary. However, you are welcome to bring some. Oil brushes can be cleaned with baby/vegetable oil, and soap and water. Well-cleaned brushes will last until you wear them out!
- Rags or good quality paper towels (like the blue automotive towels)
- Enamel, glass, or disposable palette (dollar store baking sheets and glass plates also work well)
- Palette knife
- Brushes – various sizes (e.g., 2, 4, 6, 8): brights, flats, or filberts. A couple of rounds (small or medium) may be useful. Sable (synthetic), natural white bristle, or other synthetic mixed brushes are recommended. Quality value packs of assorted sizes and types are a good place to start.
- Painting support: you will need a canvas
