This course guides young artists through the process of learning to draw from observation. Following a step by step process designed to develop fine motor skills in tandem with perceptual skills, students practice looking closely and carefully at the world around them, learning to use the information gathered to produce more realistic drawings.
Progressively challenging lessons introduce new principles each week, building a strong foundation with a wide range of media. We begin with an introduction to mark making, line drawing, and the differences between drawing materials. In the first two weeks students complete a series of still life studies exploring line, shape, and value with pencil, pen, charcoal, brush and ink. Subsequent lessons include floral compositions using texture and tone, one point perspective plein air landscapes, and proportional figure studies.
Sara Nyquist is a multidisciplinary artist living in New Orleans. She taught this summer in our Fine Arts Summer Camp, and she now joins our faculty.
