Description: This 6-week course explores the philosophical and psychological aspects of art appreciation and interpretation, drawing on the principles from Alain de Botton’s "Art as Therapy" and John Berger’s "Ways of Seeing." Additionally, it incorporates fundamental drawing and painting techniques, allowing students to experience firsthand the therapeutic and perceptual aspects of creating art.
Prerequisites:
• Although having a basic understanding of art history and appreciation would benefit the prospective student, it is not a strict requirement. This course focuses on how we view art (and its history) in order to enhance one’s appreciation of the arts.
• Previous experience in creating art (drawing, painting, etc.) is helpful but not required.
• An interest in the psychological and philosophical aspects of art is recommended.
Course Content:
• Week 1-2: Methodology and Basic Drawing Skills
o Overview of Alain de Botton’s "Art as Therapy" - Methodology section
o Understanding how art can address psychological needs and emotional well-being
o Introduction to basic drawing techniques: line, shape, and form
o Viewing and discussing Episode 1 of "Ways of Seeing”
o Practical exercises: Identifying personal responses to selected artworks and practicing basic drawing
• Week 3-4: Love and Fundamentals of Composition
o Exploring the Love section of "Art as Therapy”
o Analyzing how art can express and influence feelings of love and relationships
o Fundamentals of composition in drawing and painting: balance, contrast, and focal points
o Viewing and discussing Episode 2 of "Ways of Seeing”
o Practical exercises: Creating compositions based on the theme of love, and comparing different interpretations of a single artwork
• Week 5-6: Nature and Developing Painting Skills
o Exploring the Nature section of "Art as Therapy”
o Understanding how nature in art can provide solace and inspire creativity
o Introduction to basic painting techniques: color mixing, brushwork, and layering
o Viewing and discussing Episode 3 of "Ways of Seeing”
o Practical exercises: Creating nature-themed art with therapeutic intentions and practicing basic paintings
Materials Needed:
• A copy of Alain de Botton’s "Art as Therapy”
• Access to John Berger’s "Ways of Seeing" (4-part television series available on YouTube)
• Sketchbook or journal for reflections and exercises
• Drawing materials: pencils, erasers, paper
• Painting materials: canvas, brushes, paints (acrylic, watercolor, or oil), palette
Outcomes:
• Students will gain an understanding of how art can serve therapeutic purposes
• Students will learn to critically analyze and interpret artworks through different perspectives
• Students will develop the ability to articulate personal connections and responses to art
• Students will acquire fundamental and advanced drawing and painting skills, applying these techniques to their personal creative process
• Students will create and present a personal project that reflects their understanding of art’s therapeutic and perceptual dimensions, showcasing both analytical and
creative abilities
