Beginning Oil Painting

Beginning Oil PaintingBeginning Oil Painting

Instructor: Rebecca Madura

Description: Oil paints are one of the most popular mediums for painting. They are extremely versatile, have a long history of use by master painters, and are archival. Beginning painters are often intimidated by the idea of oil painting, but oil paints are very easy to use! In this course, you will be introduced to the materials, techniques, terms, and concepts of oil painting—from understanding your tools and materials, to laying out a palette and using color. You will also learn to stretch and prepare your own canvas.

Mixing colors, using value and temperature to create a sense of depth, space, and volume in your work will be a major part of this course. Working mostly from studio set-ups, we will explore various applications and techniques using oil paint through observation associated with realistic painting—especially honing perceptual skills in the translation of three-dimensional forms to two-dimensional surfaces, and in understanding light and the effects of light on color. Learning to use basic color theory will bring harmony and confidence to your paintings, and learning the fundamentals of the medium will provide a strong foundation for future painting practice.

This course is suitable for those new to oil painting and those with some experience wanting to build painting skills and confidence in the medium of oil paint.

The instructor will send out an email before the first day fo class letting you what to bring the first day.
