Instructor: Alex Beard
Join Alex Beard in an exploration of art and philosophy to break down the boundaries of realism, in search of lessons revealed by the natural world. This is not a class in plein air painting but rather a combination of art history and studio work. The goal is to investigate the intrinsic way that mathematics (the Divine Proportion, Fibonacci, etc.), personal observation in nature and our immediate surroundings can dictate and enhance subject, composition, and execution.
There are no required prerequisites to enroll in this class, but it is strongly suggested that students have at least some fine art experience. We will be drawing on paper with ink, graphite, and charcoal and painting on canvas. There will be a final project executed over multiple sessions, including a presentation to the class at the end
Prerequisites: drawing proficiency
Supplies: There is no need to purchase any before your first class. The detailed supplies needed for subsequent sessions will be discussed during class.
American painter and author Alex Beard is best known for his elaborate wildlife compositions created in his signature style of gestural painting, which he has coined “Abstract Naturalism.”
